The short extracts on various Bible characters make this a book that one can ‘dip into’, and therefore suitable for younger readers. It has some interesting and profitable thoughts on individuals who are types of Christ, others who are typical of the Lord’s people, some well known, others less spoken of.
The writer expounds simply and those who read the book will be able to relate their own experiences to the various characters portrayed. In the chapter entitled ‘The Psalmist David’, the writer speaks about the Psalms being a blessed manual of Christian experience, as they contain all the spiritual feelings of a child of God. He goes on to give a few suggestions of where to turn, be we in the depths or on the mountaintop.
I especially liked the chapter on Martha, Mary and Lazarus, where the writer shows the Lord Jesus ‘being touched with the feeling of our infirmities’, as He shares in the sisters’ grief over Lazarus and how His mercy and grace were displayed in His delay.
The extracts on the Epistles and the Apostles each have a different, yet equally important message to the Church.
The book starts with Jacob, touching on how he wrestled with God, pleading for a blessing, and ends with the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of Man, with a beautiful description of Christ as King in Zion.
