Authentic Christianity Vol 4 (Acts 7:1-29)

Volume 4 of the Authentic Christianity series consists of twenty sermons preached in Westminster Chapel on Sunday evenings between October 1966 and February 1967. In them all, Dr Lloyd-Jones directs his hearers away from the bankruptcy and confusion of modern thought to the only source of hope for his or any generation, the unchanging ‘gospel of God, concerning His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord’.

We welcome another volume of evangelistic sermons by the late Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (DMLJ). These were preached at Westminster Chapel on Lord’s Day evenings between October 1966 and February 1967. All of them are on the theme of Stephen’s sermon before the Jewish Sanhedrin, where he was on trial for his life. With his usual thoroughness, DMLJ explains for us the historical Old Testament background and then proceeds to show how all this leads to the Gospel of Christ. From the very beginning he lays down the vital principle that the Gospel is a sensible argument and a reasoned case. Not only that, but it is also history, something that is based upon facts and is certainly not mere emotionalism or sentimentality. Having established all that, he moves on to describe the folly and emptiness of modern thinking and living, crowning this with a masterful critique of humanism in Sermon 14. This is one of those sermons that we wish could be circulated to all modern humanists in the hope that it would demolish all their preconceived ideas. Lest any should think that DMLJ is wholly negative in his treatment of the Gospel, we must quickly correct them. Throughout the whole of the 20 sermons, Christ is held forth as the one and only Saviour with a sweetness and graciousness that we know won many hearts. A real treat for the soul and an encouragement to faith.
